Insurance Agents and Why Do You Need One?

Insurance Agents and Why Do You Need One?

Insurance; it seems like such an ugly word in this day and age. When you think of the word insurance what does it bring to mind? Is it another bill that you are required to have because you own a car or a house? Do you think of some sleazy salesman who is going to try and make you spend a ton of money that you can’t afford? There are many negative connotations when it comes to insurance and it’s really one of those products in the universe that no one really wants but actually everyone really needs and are glad to have it when the unexpected occurs.

Insurance can be confusing as there is a lot of terminology and legal language that surrounds an insurance policy. When you get your policy from the insurance company it’s usually 30-40 pages long and for the normal person its like reading stereo instructions. This is why it is important to have an insurance agent and more importantly, the RIGHT insurance agent.

When you are looking for an insurance agent to assist you there are several key points that make a good insurance agent:

  1. Experience – this is key, you want to make sure the person whom you are talking to understands the insurance industry and helps you make an educated decision on what you should purchase. So when talking to a new agent, get to know their background as this will be a very important starting point.
  2. Willingness to Listen – have you ever dealt with a salesperson who just liked to hear themselves talk? I’m sure we’ve all faced that at some point in our lives. A good insurance agent has to be willing to listen to the concerns of a customer and be able to understand what their needs are to point them to the right product.
  3. Willingness to Educate – this is another critical component of a good insurance agent. Again insurance is confusing but having an agent that can help you understand what the options are and the benefits of those options, will ensure you walk away with the coverage you need and expect.
  4. Being a Customer Advocate – while this one is harder to determine initially, a good insurance agent should always be building a relationship with their customer. You should never have the feeling that when dealing with an agent its just one transaction. An agent should be your advocate with an insurance company. Helping to ensure you have all the necessary paperwork, providing gentle reminders on payments, reviewing coverages when needs change or policies are up for renewal, answering any questions you may have, and most importantly, assist with the claim process should an incident occur.

By choosing the right insurance agent, you are ensuring you have someone in your corner to help you navigate the world of insurance and provide you with assistance, education, and recommendations when you need it most.
